What is IT Asset Management (ITAM)
IT Asset Management (ITAM) is ServiceNow's umbrella module for tracking, optimizing, and governing all your organization's technology assets — hardware, software, cloud resources, and licenses — across their full lifecycle.
Core components
Hardware Asset Management (HAM): Tracks physical assets from procurement through deployment to retirement. Each asset links to a Configuration Item (CI) record for operational state, with financial fields for cost, depreciation, and purchase orders.
Software Asset Management (SAM): Enforces license compliance and prevents costly true-ups. Reconciles publisher entitlements (Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, IBM, etc.) against discovered installations and actual usage, with reclamation workflows for unused licenses.
SaaS License Management: Extends SAM logic to cloud subscriptions. Integrates with SSO/identity provider logs and SaaS APIs to detect actual usage and reclaim unused seats.
Cloud Asset Management: Tracks cloud resources (EC2, S3, Azure VMs) as assets, capturing cost and tag metadata alongside Configuration Management Database (CMDB) data.
Why it matters
ITAM gives you visibility into what you own, what you're paying for, and what's actually in use — cutting waste, ensuring compliance, and feeding accurate cost data to finance and operations teams.
